Wajima Lacquerware
The 124 steps taken to make a single piece of Wajima Lacquerware have hardly changed in over 1,000 years. Each piece is still handmade by specialized artisans responsible for their specific step of the process.

Wood artisans first craft the base structure of the lacquerware. The fragile parts of the base are then reinforced by pasting linen onto it with lacquer. Wajima Lacquerware uses a unique technique that mixes a finely powdered mineral, jinoko, with the lacquer during the early steps of production.

Jinoko adds extra durability to the Wajima Lacquerware. The initial rough layers are then coated with more layers of finer lacquer, which are then polished to a lustrous shine, and often decorated with designs made of gold and other precious materials.

These unique techniques make Wajima Lacquerware strong and practical products not only as daily used tableware, but also as works of art.

Soup bowl with all seasons Makie
A soup bowl is one of many tableware items used daily.
You can feel the durability and the quality of the product by using it every day.
A Makie designer, who decorates the products with lacquer paint, draws spring cherry blossoms and autumn red maple leaves on the surface of the soup bowl.
This means that the bowl can be used through all the seasons.
